On 21st February 2023, Starbucks introduced Starbucks Oleato, a coffee infused with Partanna® extra virgin olive oil which offers customers a velvety smooth, deliciously lush new coffee experience.

Interestingly, when I was very young around 1980s (not trying to reveal my age hahaha), I recalled my grandfather would usually order a cup of Butter Coffee from our local coffeeshop in Singapore. The aromatic smell of the melting butter in a hot black coffee is wonderful. Unfortunately, the taste of butter in coffee requires an acquired taste. Nonetheless, I believe that Butter Coffee has been around in centuries. Such drinking trends come back on and off and it came back in Singapore a few years ago and may have died off.

It has been rumored that there are health benefits as well as side effects, e.g. laxative. When trying out this drink for such benefits, please “drink” with “a pinch of salt”. However, personally, when I drank it, I remember that I did have some form of stomach upset.

Here’s how to make butter coffee:

Brew about 1 cup (8–12 ounces or 237–355 ml) of black coffee.
Add 1–2 tablespoons of unsalted butter*, or choose ghee, a type of clarified butter lower in lactose, if you don’t eat regular butter.
You can mix all ingredients in a blender for 20–30 seconds until it resembles a foamy latte or just like that.
